From Lin Oliver: There are many ways to be a leader. One is to hold political office. I feel we made a poor choice in that selection process yesterday. But before we despair, let's remind ourselves that another, and equally powerful, way to lead is through what we express in our literature and arts. Friends in the children's book community, we are fortunate to have a direct line to tomorrow's citizens. Our books and our art can show kids what kindness and love and inclusion and empathy and fairness and high minded intellect really look like. We can lead in ways even more powerful than our elected leaders. Today, more than ever, we must believe that.

We are saddened to announce the death of one of our most beloved members, Dianne de Las Casas, writer storyteller and founder of Picture Book Month. Dianne passed away last night in a tragic house fire. A longtime member of SCBWI, she was an avid supporter of SCBWI, spoke and performed at many conferences, and astounded us all with her love for children’s literature, her dynamic personality and her ebullient spirit. This is such a loss for our community. Our hearts go out to her two daughters and her partner, John. Dianne was a shining light for us all, a vessel of love. May she rest in peace. – Lin Oliver
