We're here tonight because there's a real chance that history is about to be made. We're going to stay here until it happens. #NoBillNoBreak
The Confirmation Hearing of Betsy DeVos as our next Secretary of Education intensified my concerns regarding her nomination. Her answers to questions reinforced that she would carry to the federal level the ideological approach that led her in Michigan to fight against higher standards and accountability for charter schools and divert funds from public to private schools. As someone who has worked, beginning in the Michigan State Senate, to make sure there is equal opportunity for students needing special education services, it is disturbing to hear her unawareness of federal law that goes back to the Nixon Administration and saying she would leave it entirely to the states. Her record suggests division, not universal progress for our schools. I therefore urge the Senate to reject her nomination.
I look forward to voting against this senseless measure. twitter.com/nytimes/status…
The appointment of Steve Bannon as senior advisor and chief strategist runs in direct contradiction to President-elect Trump’s statement, “I will be the President of all Americans.” Bannon has a long and troubled history of promoting racist, sexist, anti-Semitic and white nationalist propaganda. This is a deeply disturbing appointment through which to launch his Presidential inner circle and simply continues the divisive negativity of his campaign.
