This morning I reached for this; often my go-to when my brain's not quite firing. Sometimes you need to gaze upon the work of a master of their craft. I’m sure there's thousands of AA Gill stories being told, such is the mark of the man; from people who read him to people who knew him. I certainly read him, didn’t know him, but, at a small talk he did at Gourmet Escape, I put my head in the lions mouth. Asked does anyone write a blog I put my hand up. Looking around me there were looks of slow motion horror. A what-the-fuck-have-you-done moment. I wanted to explain that I write elsewhere, "you know in print and stuff" but I'd served my purpose. I didn't receive the evisceration you may expect. I was merely the stooge for this part of the show. As captivating in person as on the page is a theme that seems to be flowing today and this mere moment proved it for me. Hailed by many as a great food and travel writer I think you can’t escape that he was simply a great writer. Full stop. Reading his last piece printed in The Sunday Times Magazine today it wasn’t a case of a quick read. It took me an hour to get through, reading back over it and stopping to take breath. For anyone who has witnessed a decline into cancer, or spent time within the NHS it all resonates, taking you from tears to laughter, and back to tears. As Sunday Times editor Martin Ivens said, the world has lost "a giant among journalists.” #aagill #sundaytimes #giantamongjournalists #aagillisaway @thestmagazine #margaretriver #gourmetescape
