I think the current spate of antiabortion laws represent a terrible attack on women. I absolutely believe abortion is a moral issue, but one of private and not public morality. I trust women to make their own moral choices and biological decisions, and I do not believe government has any right to make such decisions for us. Men should not be able to make laws that govern a woman’s body. This wave of draconian laws is all part of a strategy to overturn Roe v. Wade, of course. And the truth is that it might work. These cases will send the issue to the Supreme Court and their decision could go either way. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, it will create a lot of suffering. Rich women will continue to have safe abortions; women who are not rich will go back to the days of back alley abortions, causing great harm and even death. But the women of America will stick together through this. We will not take this quietly. We will not just be victims, we will somehow be victors. It’s one more reminder that it’s time for us to claim power in a way that we have never done before.
