WI Supreme Court race just called for Bradley. Congratulations, Wisconsin voters - especially anyone who voted for Bernie or Hillary and didn't vote Kloppenberg. You just handed an unethical, intellectually unprepared bigot a 10-year term on the state's Supreme Court, and virtually guaranteed that no litigant will get a fair hearing for years to come. I'm so angry, so disappointed, and so disgusted. What a terrible night.
Last night I wrote about being assaulted by being "grabbed in the pussy." Every woman has stories like this, and many of you shared them. I can recall many times being touched without my consent, though this incident stands out as especially terrifying -- and I wanted to share it because it's exactly what Donald Trump bragged about. What is just as disturbing is the response of many GOP leaders, who seemed offended by Trump's vulgar language but didn't mention that he was describing sexual assault. They talked about how women should be "revered" or "championed" -- bullshit. We just want and deserve to be treated with basic human dignity, all of us. As Alexandra Petri wrote, "This is what it gets back to: the idea that men are people, and women are just women. . . . "This is egregious, but it is not isolated. It’s every time the Serious Concern is that a young man’s life might theoretically be ruined — by the act of punishing him for what he did to ruin someone else’s life. It’s every time someone talks about how awful something would be if it happened to your wife or your daughter or your mother — instead of just to you, to a person. Every time women’s existence is limited to their relationship to men. Every time women are treated merely as gatekeepers of sex, a resource that is somehow obtainable without the enthusiastic participation of another person who might have opinions on the matter. Every time men don’t read books by women, every time boys can’t find it in themselves to identify with a female protagonist. Every time people look at a movie with one woman in it and nine men and say “yes, this seems fine.” Every time we say to little girls in countless ways that what matters is how you look, not what you think." Interesting perspective on what constitutes "safe." I wasn't happy she picked Kaine at first (he was my last choice by far), but I'm getting more comfortable with the pick the more I learn about him. What do you think? Link
(2/2) we haven't had any violence at Madison protests. It's violence we're protesting! And structural injustice! #BlackLivesMatter
This is what leadership looks like. I applaud Mark Pocan for standing up for public education, and organizing to oppose Betsy DeVos' disastrous appointment. "Making large political contributions to Donald Trump and countless other politicians and organizations aimed at dismantling public education does not count as a qualification for the position of the head of the Department of Education," Pocan said in a press conference on Tuesday. Bravo, Mark! Link
