Today Justin Trudeau said that he wants to "phase out" Alberta's oil sands. Let's be clear what he's talking about. The oil sands represent trillions of dollars of future wealth for Canadian families. That's our ability to pay for pensions, healthcare, and infrastructure and education. It also represents hundreds of thousands of good paying jobs for working, middle-income families. I have a message for Justin Trudeau: We will not let you do to Alberta's oil and gas industry, what your father did to Alberta with his National Energy Program. Are you with me? A new report today indicates that last year Canada imported 759,000 barrels of foreign oil a day or nearly $13 billion a year with a growing share of it coming from OPEC countries. Saudi Arabia is responsible for over 10% of the oil that we import into Canada representing over $1.5 billion that went to the Royal House of Saud in Saudi Arabia rather than staying here in Canada to buy Canadian oil. The proposed Energy East Pipeline would bring ethical Western Canadian oil to refineries in Eastern Canada so that Quebec, Atlantic Canada and parts of Ontario would no longer have to spend money importing oil from OPEC countries like Saudi Arabia. Albertans and Western Canadians have been so generous over the years with equalization payments - tens of billions of dollars that have gone to Eastern provinces. The very least that our friends in Eastern Canada do is to work with us to ensure the rapid approval of the Energy East Pipeline so we can replace the 759,000 barrels of foreign oil used in the East with 759,000 barrels of Western Canadian oil. This would keep billions of dollars here in Canada for hospitals, roads, and schools while improving our standard of living and bring more jobs and opportunity to all Canadians.
