The Long And Winding Road As you may know by now I was diagnosed with Ramsey Hunt Syndrome back in early October. Here it is three days from December and I’m still on the road to recovery. There has been nothing more bizarre in my life than being incapacitated for close to two months. Shingles to RHS, to Bell’s Palsy on the right side of my face, plus fatigue, headaches, nerve pain, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, vertigo, and weight loss. I weigh 153 pounds! Needless to say, a combination like that plus the side effects from my meds lead to a great deal of anxiety, fear, hallucinations and depression to go with everything else. I’m fortunate that the Bell’s Palsy is mostly gone now. The paper tape to keep my eye closed and the pirate patch have been discarded, plus I can finally drink something without drooling or needing a straw. My energy is improving slowly, and the headaches, nerve pain, and vomiting have diminished. My real issue right now is dizziness, nausea, brutal acid reflux, and vertigo. My present state prevents me from driving, and makes exercising or rehab a real merry-go-round. It’s the damn vertigo that exacerbates all of my remaining ailments. Rumor has it (it depends who you talk to) that vertigo goes away eventually. Eventually? What in the hell does that mean? “It could be a month or as long as a year” my doctor tells me. I know I’m not the first person to get sick, and I’m sure plenty of you reading this have been through much worse, so I apologize if I sound like a whiner. Folks have been asking since I’ve been MIA for so long so I thought it was time for this update. The process of healing when it comes to Ramsey Hunt is not a straight line. Doctors can’t tell you one way or another how you will heal. "The symptoms and severity are different for everyone" they tell me. Yesterday I actually had enough energy to do a mini pull-up and push-up workout. Today I have the spins, no appetite, and I’m flat on my back most of the day. It’s two steps forward and one and a half steps back down this long and winding road to recovery.
