Today, a student said “You’re a good teacher. You should go teach white kids.” I didn’t understand it then, but now the pain is setting in.
The idea that the student(s) believe that they’re not as deserving of a good teacher speaks volumes about our system and how it values us.
One of the reasons why “This is not our America” is so common is because our textbooks have sold and solidified the American fairy tale.
Yes, today I did have a meeting at the US Department of Education with Acting Secretary of Education John King and teachers from across the states. Whenever I'm in a position to be invited, as an unbought, unfiltered educator, I continue to push hard on the levers of equity and justice in ways I hope folks at the federal level can comprehend. I take this responsibility of having a voice seriously, which is why, when invited, I don't half-step. My heart is exactly where it needs to be on these issues. Hopefully, I did you all proud.
