She’s smarter, better looking, more well-read, and more stylish than I am, but good fortune is on my side, so she said yes :) In lieu of your standard romantic platitudes, I’d like to keep it real for a minute & speak from the heart, so here we go:
We met at work. They always say “don’t date at work”, but now that I can speak from direct experience, let me confirm: Dating a coworker is a terrible idea! But we made it through that, and went on to have an amazing few years together, from moving in together and beach vacations, to a remote drive through Jordan’s mountains on the way to Petra, and all the way to looking over the old city of Jerusalem from the mount of olives.
She brings really good music into my life, and I brought martial arts & the UFC into hers -- boy did I get the better end of that exchange ;) She took me skiing, I took her skydiving (again, I’m still winning), and we always keep things adventurous for each other. She also took me from atrocious baggy khakis & orthopedic-looking shoes to slim jeans & low canvas kicks, making it less embarrassing for all of you to be seen with me. Of course, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. We’ve both had doubts at one point or another, but doubt is a good way to make sure you’re not sleep-walking through life.
Telling someone you want to marry them is not just suggesting an idea at the end of a feeling (as in “I love you so much I want to marry you”), it’s actually the deepest commitment a human being can make. It’s not a promise to never annoy, disappoint, or even hurt the feelings of the other person (because all of these things will happen). Telling someone you want to marry them is committing, from this day forward, to never ever let them doubt that they are the most important thing in your life, that their happiness shapes your life plans, and that you will forever have their back, through disappointments and triumphs. When they say they want to marry you too and you know they feel that commitment as deeply as you do, it’s really a special moment. This picture is that moment.
