Instagram Post
Below is an email that Dr. Marshall Hicks, MD Anderson’s President ad interim, sent to our employees about some of our heroes of Hurricane Harvey. You can also see a few photos of our employees who've helped us weather the storm here. “For all of us here in Houston, these last six days have presented extraordinary challenges. We have weathered an unprecedented storm that has taken so much from so many of our employees and patients, and caused untold distress and heartache. But even in these most difficult days, our people have shined. Many of our employees have been here around the clock for several days as part of Ride-Out Teams, working to ensure our inpatients continue to receive exceptional care. From our facilities and UT Police Department teams working 24/7 to protect our environment and heroically support movement of people and supplies, to the Welcome Center staff managing our central call line, to our phlebotomists ensuring our blood supply, the collective effort has been impressive. Our faculty and nurses have worked side by side with our housekeeping and dining services staff to keep us operational. These Ride-Out Team members have been away from their families for days, and some have stayed here as their homes flooded. But members of our Ride-Out Teams are not our only heroes of Hurricane Harvey. Over the last few days, I have heard stories of the exceptional ways we are taking care of one another – and of our patients. Victor Arboleda from Diagnostic Imaging rode his bike into the Texas Medical Center from Pearland to ensure our inpatients could get MRIs. Serej Konoplev, M.D., in Hematopathology traveled by kayak to rescue Nitin Jain, M.D., and his family from their flooded home. And many of our employees have been volunteering at local shelters, helping members of our community who have been displaced from their homes. The days, weeks and months ahead won’t be easy. But as we work together to resume normal operations here at MD Anderson and rebuild our community in Houston, I know our dedicated and compassionate team will get the job done.” #mdandersonstrong #endcancer #harvey #houston #hospital #texas #cancerfighter #cancersucks #endcancer
