I'm heartbroken by the violence and bloodshed in Dallas. As the wife and daughter of police officers, I know just how brave and committed our law enforcement officers are. When others run from danger, they run straight toward it to protect us. This morning, I called Governor Abbott to express my condolences and told him that New Mexicans are praying for the officers in Dallas, their families, and law enforcement around the country.
In the upcoming special session, I will ask the legislature to reinstate the death penalty as an option for those who murder children and police officers, as well as correctional officers. Those horrific crimes deserve the ultimate punishment. I will also ask the legislature to strengthen New Mexico's "Three-Strikes" law to get the most violent criminals off our streets for good. Representative Paul Pacheco, a retired police officer, will once again sponsor the "Three-Strikes" bill. Representatives Monica Youngblood and Andy Nunez will co-sponsor the death penalty bill. Rep. Youngblood represents the district in which Victoria Martens was brutally murdered. Rep. Nunez represents Hatch, where Officer Jose Chavez was murdered in the line of duty. http://www.kob.com/new-mexico-news/martinez-eyes-death-penalty-in-special-session/4268267/?cat=500 Link
I am very disappointed that Bernalillo County enacted a Sanctuary County policy yesterday. One of my first acts as Governor was to eliminate the Sanctuary State policy enacted by former Governor Bill Richardson. Illegal immigrants who commit crimes in New Mexico should not be given sanctuary.
The current crime situation is unacceptable. I recently ordered our state law enforcement agencies to target the most violent criminals in the Albuquerque area who have violated probation or parole and get them back behind bars immediately. Our great officers conducted a sweep this week and got dozens of career criminals off the streets! This is just one facet of a crime-fighting effort that the state is undertaking to assist local law enforcement. http://krqe.com/2017/08/08/new-mexico-police-rounding-up-50-violent-criminals/ Link
