You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes every day. Unless you’re too busy. Then you should sit for an hour.” -Zen proverb

If you made a resolution this year, I'm glad you did. I'm excited for you and your new goal. This morning, I went for my Tuesday run only to realize everyone else was out for their "New Year's Resolution Run." Just like every year, I suspect I'll have the trail to myself again in a few weeks. If you want to change something about your life this year, here's something to remember: - Your new MacBook, your Molskine, your fancy apps and pens do not make you a writer. Actually writing...consistently...for a long time makes you a writer. Your new shoes, compression socks, iPod, and your silly Fitbit do not make you a runner. Running does. Your commitment to call your friends, spend more time with your family and be a better person do not actually make you any better. Unless you follow through, they just make you a liar. Here's a hint about New Year's Resolutions: If you need one special day in a year to make a resolution to change, you don't actually want to change. You just like the *idea* of it. Instead of focusing this year on changing something you don't like about yourself, try to forget about that and work to get better at something you're already good at. If you do, I suspect you'll be a lot more happy with yourself come this time next year.
