Old Kingdom Peking Duck! What a treat. It was not what we planned but as always there is something good to eat in Melbourne and this one took a bitter taste from our mouths after a bad experience nearby in Smith Street. We had joined friends at Sugar Prawn last night. They had been regulars there prior to the rebrand from Masak Masak. Staunch supporters of their friend Travis - still the chef and part owner there - and locals, they had continued to dine there even in the many months when the venue had fallen out of fashion, not prospered and been empty. But last night our booking of 6 became 7 and we were told they wouldn't allow the seventh guest to be seated. Now I am not ignorant of hospitality and have myself run the floor of a 200 seat venue that diners queued for. The attitude I witnessed at Sugar Prawn did not constitute good hospitable service. In my experience things can be done even when a venue is busy, to accomodate an extra guest in a casual dining venue. Considering his prior loyalty, one of my friends felt considerably affronted. To compond things they had seated us in the draft of the doorway. There was no way that we were going to draw straws to see who had to leave, so we all walked out and went to Old Kingdom. Mr Sticki and I will not return to Sugarprawn. Melbourne is blessed with many good venues and there is no need to put up with poor service. So do not encourage bullying anywhere. Go and visit the places that have withstood the test of time by knowing, respecting and servicing their regulars well. #pekingduck#melbourne#fitzroy#nothappyjan#hospo#chefslife
