Congratulations to dancer Leanne Benjamin, pictured here in Jason Bell's stunning 2006 image, on receiving her Member of the Order of Australia in Sydney yesterday. One of the most popular images in our collection, the picture was taken near Alice Springs with Benjamin taking flight over a road train.
Happy 149th birthday to one of our favourite blokes, writer and poet Henry Lawson. We have this pen in our collection, made from wood, steel and string, which he used in Leeton, NSW in the early 1900s.
Did you know Lawson had lost all his hearing by age 14?
Norman Lindsay described it as ‘a little bundle of piffle’ but we beg to differ. #onthisday in 1918 his book, The Magic Pudding, was published – and has never been out of print since. Apparently Lindsay was never proud of what is one of the most popular Australian children’s books, perhaps because it departed from his more serious work. But honestly, how could you go wrong with a book that combined dessert with really cute Aussie animals.
