Celebrating my father turning 75 today. Maxime Velard is a Jew born in Paris during WWII, hidden from the Nazis by the Jesuits, then brought to Philadelphia by his distant relatives. He moved to NYC in 1965 to the sounds of Bob Dylan blasting out windows. He hung out in the Village with both Bobby Fischer and DeNiro. He got his PH.D. In Mathematics from CUNY and built the first ATM for Citibank. He met a woman from Alabama on the Upper West Side in 1975, married her two years later and had two kids - a chubby boy in 1979 and a girl with red hair in 1983. About a year ago he moved to Brighton Beach and now lives amongst Russians. I learned the most important things from him: the value of hard work, focus, and how not to take yourself too seriously. Even though you'll never read this Dad, you should know you're an absolute legend and truly one of a kind. Happy birthday.
Ten years ago almost to the day I released an EP that changed my life. Before those 6 songs I was a public school gym teacher. Pretty soon after they came out I was major label artist living in London. A decade later I'm still making music for a living, and that's a gift anyway you cut it. If there's any lesson I've learned along the way it's that you're only a song away from your dreams. Keep making your tunes kids. The future is more surprising than anything you can imagine.
