2nd at the HURT 100 in 21h55m. That was an incredibly difficult day at the office and I'm so proud to have persevered through so much out there in almost 22hrs of running. I never once said it out loud, but I was battling hard not to drop from about mile 25 through 60. The humidity put a beat down on me early and I was in rally mode for most of the day. I made a pact with myself to just keep moving, no matter how slow, and that eventually I'd have to feel better. Coming into mile 60 I told myself that this was where my training would pay off, from miles 60 through 100. At 80 I sat down at the aid station to eat and my incredible wife just kept pulling me up from the chair and saying "You've gotta go. Get out of here already." Reed just drooled on me and eventually I slogged back out. In that moment I was again completely spent and uncertain as to how I'd make it through the final 20 miles. While climbing out of mile 80 over the hill known as Hogsback the calories from the aid station kicked in, a perfect tempo song hit my ears via my iPod shuffle and all of a sudden I found myself running grades I'd hiked all day long. I was in 2nd and I was damn sure I was gonna give it all to at least sustain position till the finish. I literally ate nothing but ice cream / popsicles and watermelon for the final 20 miles, and I ended up with the fastest final 20 in the race. There's a lesson there somewhere, and it has to do with popsicles saving your life :) 21:55 was my slowest HURT, & it was the first time I've not won, but this ranks right up there as one of the most meaningful runs for me. Side note, Jeff Browning literally grew up in a barn where he used to work in 100 degrees & 90% humidity, that combined with the fact that he's done 23 100's now makes him a pretty damn legit at the 100 distance. He was clinical and seemingly in control all day long. Well done Jeff, and super stoked to have an all PNW podium rounded out by my good buddy Yassine! I'd be remiss if I didn't give a huge thanks to Ethan Newberry & Kim Teshima for being the best ice cream Sherpas ever, & to Jessie Haynes who just decided to crew for most everyone in the race :) I love my HURT family!
