The changes in Portland leave us very reflective of the past, so here's a little Food Fight history: In 2002, we were just two working class kids from the conservative South who, through an adventurous series of events, found ourselves fleeing Queens, NY to Portland, OR, a known haven for punks like us. So across the country we went with our dog, Ago. We did low-level, freelance graphic design, which gave us enough to live and lots of time to explore this then-sleepy, sweet town. Portland was already pretty cool for vegan food, but we were shopping at 3 different grocery stores to get all the basic vegan items we used. We thought it would be great if there could be one place where we would shop and get all that we needed. One safe place for vegans to know that every item was without animal products. So with no business experience, a couple of credit cards, and a dream, in September 2003, we opened the first ever vegan grocery store. We've been so fortunate to have been able to open at the time we did and how we did, and we continue to do it all through an ethical, animal rights lens. This one, humble store is our life's work, and we are still learning as we go, with the awesome support of our staff, customers, and friends. Mom-and-pop shop forever.
