Thrilled that so many folks are happy we allowed ‘I Want You’ to be used in #jojo_anime - it’s a cool show and I was happy to say yes.
It’s ironic to me that as an openly gay person, an artist and someone who has always fought for equality speaks up about those issues or against inequality, it upsets some people who consider themselves 'fans'. For those extremely conservative or extremely closed minded folks (a minority on here) who claim to be or have been fans of my first band or any of my solo music, it’s shocking to me you are only now coming to terms with the fact that the guy who wore makeup, eyeliner and married a man might not be a fan of right wing politics. For anyone who missed the clues (though I find it impossible, I mean did you SEE how I dressed in the 90’s or listen to any of my lyrics about domestic violence, sexuality and the struggle for the working class?) here’s a refresher for you. I’m gay. I was born this way. It is not a choice. It is a gift. I came from a family who struggled with a violent and alcoholic family member and somehow we made it out alive. I am someone who has lived through the ridicule of bullying, homophobia, rejection and often times all in the public eye. That experience has informed everything I do on this earth. I believe in equal rights, not just for myself and my husband, but for all humans regardless of race, gender or identity. All of the labels you can think of; feminist, liberal thinking, left wing, progressive, humanist, inclusive - they all describe me. I am also proud of the fact I speak up about what I believe is good, right and fair and I use my music, my art, my performance and yes even my social media presence, to reflect those core values about myself. That’s what I do. That’s what I’m sharing with the world. I’ve never made a single decision when it comes to my career based on money. Speaking up against someone like Donald Trump or about LGBTQ issues is NOT a helpful career move. I get a lot of negative attention from closed minded people but I do it because it’s important to me. I'm not anti-republican. I'm someone who is DEEPLY concerned at the level of fear, hatred and bigotry that has risen primarily from the Trump platform and the GOP in regards to minorities and basic human rights. The vitriol, the name-calling, the finger pointing at immigrants, women, and things we don't understand is a terrible step backwards for humanity. That's what I'm standing up against. There are deep problems in the world and they stem from persecution of innocents, a fear of what we don't understand. Bathroom bills? Walls between the USA and Mexico? Torture? Media censorship? Removing marriage and reproductive rights? These are horrific steps backward. All of my output comes from artistic expression and a desire to connect to the world and make sense of the world through music, art and performance. I came from little means like many of you, and I’ve been the top of the mountain and kicked down the other side of it and it never once affected the way I live my life or the career decisions I make. I don’t see the people who connect with me as ‘fans’ or ‘customers’. You’re like family to me. Sometimes family disagree but the one thing I’ll never tolerate is someone putting me in to a box and declaring their love for me conditional. Comments like ‘You should just stick to singing and shut up about politics’ or ‘You’re a liberal piece of garbage and I’m no longer a fan’ do not bother me. It just makes me realize your love was conditional and I don’t stand for that. So if you have a problem that I’m gay, that I use my platform for something other than ego inflation and making money off you, then you might have been family once but you’re the bad kind of family that I don’t want contact with anymore. This is my home, these are my values, these are my core beliefs. If you have a problem with that, the door is always available to you. I will not miss your patronage. You don't get to define me. For the rest of you (the majority) who feel something in common with me and share core beliefs - thank you for speaking up! Thank you for being my companion on this journey. I love you and I’m so grateful for you. A final piece of amazingness - every time I post something political I lose some followers but GET THIS! I ALSO GAIN the same amount or MORE new followers. Every. Single. Time. What’s happening? The small majority of naysayers are slowly but surely being replaced by new followers. That’s a wonderful trend and I completely support that. So if this post and my political posts annoy or offend you, please leave. It’s all good. Behind you is a line of folks who are only just understanding the guy from Savage Garden is much more than just a relic from their past. He’s someone who thinks like they do.
