I just got my first CMA Country Music Association Nomination yesterday... This is Awesome!! Thank you CMA!!
So much love and respect for this guy.. Randy Travis
My first IRONMAN 70.3 Hawaii
6 months ago.. I was your average swimmer. Basically I could swim but not properly or for length. Just short bursts... You know.. Like every little kid swims to get from one side of the pool to the other.. Lol.
So I signed up for Masters Class in Nashville Nashville Aquatic Club Masters with Ashley Whitney. She won us the Gold Medal in the Olympics. So I knew I was in good hands. I also went the extra mile "literally" with Open Water Swimming with Allison Ware. Open water is a whole different Ball Game. Then to throw in Open water "Ocean" swim..yeah.. Needless to say the training for the swim was worth every minute spent in the water!!
So fast forward to the Start of the swim in Hawaii at Hapuna Beach. The water was amazing!! Bath water really..fish and turtles everywhere and clear as you could imagine. Then you throw a few hundred swimmers around you and it becomes a human washing machine!! Lol. A traffic jam at first and took awhile for me to get a Rythym going. But once I locked in I was Rockin' and felt great. Didn't get kicked too much or pulled under by other swimmers so that was a plus. ROKA Sports gear was amazing and the New R1 goggles didn't leak once!! Thank GOD!! Cause leaky goggles suck! So thank you #Roka
I was so excited to exit the water and get to my bike transition area I forgot to take my swim skin off so that slowed my transition down a bit.
Once I got on the bike.. It was awesome. I immediately settled into a Rythym. 4 months ago.. I never would of thought this. Well...Because I didn't have a BIKE!!! Lol. Yes.. I've only actually owned my own bike for 4 months. I spent every weekend on the Natchez Trace putting in the miles...each time I got better...but I would always be over 3 hours getting in 56....So I was ecstatic to come under 3 hours for the 56 miles on race day. Hawaii course is known for crazy Cross winds that can literally blow you over... Luckily the winds were not bad!! The scenery you can't beat... Ocean on one side and volcano on the other.. I mean.. And you're in Hawaii!!
I didn't push it super hard on the bike because I wanted to save my legs for the run. Plus I just didn't know what to expect from my body and how it would respond to the swim/Bike/run in succession. Last thing I wanted was to happen was to get to the run and my body seize up. Trust me. It happens..and happened to people during this race.
Again.. Super excited to now be off the bike and ready to run. This is my best out of the three. The problem... It was so HOT and the course was tough. Apparently one of the toughest on the circuit. No doubt. I took it easy. Was extremely nervous about over pushing and cramping up. I would of hated to get this far and not conk out. With the heat my main priority was hydration. I was surprised to see the aid stations having Cola and red bull along with the expected water and Gatorade. I made the mistake by drinking too much a few times and side cramped up a bit. When I hit the last 2 miles I knew I would finish and honesty took it all in!!! My surroundings... Thinking back on all the training.. The not knowing becoming the "knowing" what to expect. It was an Amazing feeling crossing the finish line. The cool part was I felt great. I wasn't dying when I finished. I knew my training prepared me for the moment. I also knew I could of pushed harder and would of been ok. The first goal was to have fun and Finish.
The second was to finish under 6 hours. Which I did as well. And finished the entire race in the Top 25% of the field. Most of my training was done alone running around and through the streets of Nashville and biking either on the Natchez Trace or in my living room on my bike trainer. The swim was always with a group or with a coach. Thad Beaty helped me with my online coaching regiment via TrainingPeaks.
Now that I know what to expect.. I'm ready to kick it up a notch for the next one!!! This was a life changing experience of knowing what I thought were my limits and how to break through them.
Listen... I was a Baseball Player... Never ran track... Was never a cyclist.. And for sure wasn't a swimmer. Lol.
I have so much respect for this sport. So much respect for the Triathlete. I look forward to the next IRONMAN 70.3 IRONMAN
Thanks to everyone that has followed me throughout my training and through the race!!!
Less then 24hrs ago I stood in this exact spot.. I felt defeated.. Not physically.. But mentally. For the last six months I've been training for my first IRONMAN #im703honu #imhonu703 IRONMAN 70.3 IRONMAN 70.3 Hawaii It is now 3 weeks away.. All the hours I've put on the Bike, Run and Swim are starting to pay off. The problem with the swim is that I was doing all my training in a pool. A pool that is heated, clear, controlled, and has walls to grab onto if you get tired. Lol.
I did my first open water swim yesterday. I was excited. Was ready to kill it. Then I get in.. It's freezing. Didn't have my wet suit on because the race I'm doing is not wet suit legal.. So I decided to go without and use my Swim Skin. Which if you're not used to it.. And I'm not.... is very tight and constricting. Amazing suits and will make you faster in the water but just takes some getting used to with breathing. The other unexpected.. I was so used to swimming and being able to SEE!!! Well in Lakes... You can't see shit. I started to panic. I couldn't breathe that well already because I was shivering so much and I felt like I had duct tape strapped around my chest from the tight suit and I couldn't see!! I got out of the water.. Defeated.
I hate to FAIL.. I've been competitive my entire life. I was a baseball player through College. I never took swim.. Never ran track and the only biking I did was buying a mountain bike from Walmart to mess around on. So this entire journey of doing my first Iron Man is ALL new to me.
I sucked it up went straight back to the lake today and was determined to succeed. Brought my ROKA Sports Maverick wetsuit and....... CRUSHED it!! I re-learned today.. That you can overcome anything. You CAN win. Only if you want too.
Well.. It's Official NOW! @CharlesEsten confirms with me on CMA Close-Up Stage that "Nashville" is having a Season 5 @CMT @AmericasMorning
I don't know what I'm doing... BUT.. I do know that bud Dierks Bentley has a badass album coming out called "Black" May 27th!!
