I caught this young female duiker by hand last week... so skinny and weak that I could outrun her with ease. Unfortunately after I caught her, I realized that her condition was even worse than I thought and that there was nothing we could do to save her. As I held her weak body in my hands and she started screaming out in a terrible alarm call, I had tears come to my eyes. This beautiful little creature--alone and no hope to live.
It's terribly hard to explain the heart and compassion of a hunter... how we can care so deeply about animals, yet still hunt them. In fact, I shot a big male duiker just three days after this. That being said, this is the part of hunting that anti-hunters don't understand--the bond we form with nature and the deep love and passion we have for these beautiful animals and the wild places they live in. Jose Ortega y Gasset captured an aspect of it when he said: "One does not hunt in order to kill, one kills in order to have hunted."
I am a conservationist at heart, as well as a hunter. Actually, I am a conservationist BECAUSE I am a hunter. I'll never apologize for that.
