"...let's paint our houses bright colors and live really close together and eat breakfast every morning on the sea..." i feel like this city was planned by a secret society of tiny genius 4 yr olds
this morning i was awake before the sun was. there wasn't enough light in my room to see, so i flicked a switch. i felt a little cold, so i pushed a button. it seemed a little quiet, so i tapped a screen. i noticed i was thirsty, so i turned a faucet. i wanted you, so i picked up my phone.
i lay on the floor, basking in the heat of the vent, foot tapping to the beat of the song you sent me, took another drink, stared at a picture of you and wondered if living in a world where we have so much immediate control over our environment makes it a lot harder for us to live with each other, creatures with no buttons.
i thought about how the moon moves across the sky, how seeds become trees, how babies turn into people and that maybe so much instant gratification is setting me up to miss the beauty or importance of just how long all that takes.
i'm not sure if i've seen love. i used to think it was that rush rush we feel to be next to each other. now i think that's just something in our brains that makes sure we have babies. in all the constant urgency to arrive arrive arrive i think most of the time we just end up missing each other.
i don't want to miss you.
maybe love is what would grow,, slowly,, between people who weren't so busy trying to control each other that they actually had the time to look at each other, to see.
i don't know how to do this. but i'm going to learn. i want to look at you for a long time, darling

as you can see, like a lot of people, i've never really known what to do at my own birthday. but as i've grown, i've become more and more interested in spending my life in ways that tangibly benefit the people around me.
this year, i decided to do a #reversebirthday, which means that instead of celebrating by receiving, i want to celebrate by giving.
in lieu of gifts, several of the best people i know are bringing coconut water, fresh undies, functional clothes they don't wear anymore, 6x8 tarps, snacks etc (or just their presence) which we'll be giving to streetfolks in downtown los angeles together as a group
i share this for two reasons:
1) i am learning that giving in small ways like this is a lot of fun, way easier than it seems, can make more of an impact than you might imagine + a lot of people will jump at the chance when invited to join you.
i did a small calculation and realized that if only 10% of the world's population started doing #reversebirthdays, all the extra days of giving would add up to 2,054,794 human years. every year. that kind of blew my mind. i want to add my tiny %
so, if you're interested in doing your own version of a reverse birthday, dm your email and i'll send you a simple PDF i made describing what i did, to give you some ideas. i think it's a trend worth starting.
2) if you think you can make it tomorrow night at 5:00 pm in silverlake, dm me and i'll send you details. bring a friend :)
if you got this far, thanks for your attention. i hope your day is ????⚡️????
he's beautiful. i named him 'Joshua'
