As you prepare to attempt to come back home to or around the Navy Yard neighborhood, please be mindful that there are still ongoing and sudden road closures (portions of M Street, the 11th Street Bridge) as part of the investigations and searches related to the shooting incident on the base of the Washington Navy Yard this morning. Although several buildings along M Street are still on lockdown and most of the residential buildings have encouraged residents to shelter in place and not leave the buildings, so far I have not seen any restrictions from actually coming home. Please be cautious as this is still an active scene and investigations are ongoing. My thoughts and prayers are with our neighborhood, the Washington Navy Yard, and with all of the victims and those who know and love them.
I'm excited to announce that today I'm launching my campaign for DC Council At-Large (D) for 2016. Here's why: vimeo.com/135495665
Just back from a meeting with residents in the Capper Seniors building on 5th Street SE. I'll be honest, it's pretty easy to let people who aren't online as much slip through the cracks on issues, so actually going to their buildings and listening / talking / interacting in person is incredibly important for rounding out the way I act as commissioner. Tonight's meeting was mostly about the proposed Virginia Avenue Tunnel CSX project, which would occur immediately adjacent to their property. Most of their very valid concerns relate to accessibility, air quality, and safety -- which are known issues -- but it was moving to hear them again from a population that doesn't have as much choice about where they live and how they get around. This is their home, and a disruptive project like this threatens their experience of home. I also spent time going over the latest neighborhood news: Whole Foods, movie theater, Buzz Bakery, Bluejacket, Canal Park Ice Rink, and more. Like all of you, they'd love to see some of these things happen a little faster, but they're generally excited about the way things are developing in the neighborhood. A good night..
