HARAMBE IS DEAD
Commentary by Captain Paul Watson
Harambe is dead because an irresponsible and negligent mother allowed her 4-year old son to fall into a Gorilla enclosure.
Think about that for a moment.
This mother allowed her “4-year old ” son to climb over a fence and approach a 15 foot drop onto a concrete floor. Forget about the fact that there was a gorilla down there, what the hell was she doing while her child made his way towards what could be a fatal fall.
She should be charged with criminal negligence and child abuse.
As a parent I find it incomprehensible that another parent would stand there and do nothing but scream. I would have immediately and without hesitation have jumped into that enclosure to protect my child, no matter the risks and It would not have been the gorilla that would worry me but rather the consequence of the 15-foot drop. But again as a parent I can’t even imagine how a 4-year old child was able to wander away . Was she texting someone or chatting on her cell phone?
Now this woman wants us to respect her privacy. She thanked the Lord for delivering her baby back to her. Well woman, it was not the Lord. Harambe was trying to help your child until some idiots with guns decided to settle the issue the way most police and security in America tend to settle an issue – with deadly force.
Harambe is dead, a day after his 17th birthday, because the people who run the Cincinnati Zoo are grossly incompetent. If they had any knowledge and understanding about lowland gorillas they would have quickly observed that Harambe meant no harm to the child and was in fact protecting him.
What we saw was an incredible act of compassion by a gorilla for a human child. An act of kindness and concern that was rewarded with a bullet.
Harambe is dead because of a bunch of ignorant human gawkers kept screaming, thus motivating the horrific response. Where were the keepers? Surely they could see that Harambe was not behaving violently. What kind of ignorant and incompetent cowards do they have working at that damn zoo anyhow?
Harambe is dead because zoos are no place for wild animals to be imprisoned.
Harambe should have been in the lowland jungles of Africa, with his own kind doing what gorillas were born to do and that means being a gorilla, not some character in a freak show so a bunch of gawking ignorant anthropocentric hominids can stare, tease, laugh, and take selfies.
I swear it is incidents like these that make me see how utterly pathetic and clueless human beings can be.
The killing of Harambe was cold-blooded, unprovoked and senseless murder and the fingers of those who pulled the trigger belong to a special kind of stupid.
The zoo feebly tried to defend the shooting in a release where they stated: “The gorilla was violently dragging and throwing the child.”
This was not what eye witnesses saw and the proof that this statement is a lie is the very fact that the child was released from the hospital shortly after, unharmed, and if a 400 pound gorilla was actually being violent there is no way that child would have remained unharmed.
Harambe died because we enslave gorillas and other animals for our entertainment.
Predictably the zoos trotted out their go-to apologist Jack Hanna to proclaim that the zoo did the right thing, that it was a choice between a gorilla and a human being.
No it was not. The kid was not going to be killed by this gorilla. In fact there is no case of a gorilla in captivity ever killing a child and these gorillas are actually approachable in the wild.
But Jack Hanna gets paid to spew such nonsense because if he actually knew anything about gorillas he would have understood what Harambe was trying to do.
And what about the child whose hand Harambe gently held in his own? What kind of trauma will this boy experience from seeing the gentle being who tried to help him gunned down because a few pathetic individuals wanted to pretend Harambe was King Kong and the they were stupidly trying to save Faye Wray.
What brings tears to my eyes, what makes me sick inside is the knowledge that this noble creature was trying to help, that he knew the child was in trouble and his compassion was contemptuously dismissed with bullets.
I am disgusted with the Cincinnati zoo, disgusted with the men who killed Harambe, and disgusted with this pathetic excuse for a mother who is the root cause of this tragedy.
I feel pity for the boy, because for the next 14 years or so he will have to live with this woman and with the knowledge that because she allowed him to fall into that enclosure Harambe, the kindly creature that held his hand, is now dead.
Added comment. Thane Maynard the zoo director said that despite the boy's ability to climb over the barrier, the exhibit is safe. "People can climb over barriers, and that's what happened." Now that is a really asinine comment. If it was safe the boy would not have fallen in. The incident demonstrated that it is not safe. When a 4 year old can get into an enclosure with any animal at a zoo, the security at the zoo is seriously flawed.
In Memory of Lorenzo, the Doomed but Victorious Gladiator
By Captain Paul Watson
For the first time in 25 years, a Spanish matador has died in the bullring.
29-year old Victor Barrio was fatally gored in Teruel in Aragon, Spain yesterday by a 1,275 pound bull named Lorenzo.
His shocked wife watched from the crowd of “horrified” fans as the bull’s horn pierced her husband’s lung and severed his aorta.
She wept and lamented that “life is unfair” in response to his death.
As unfair as it may have been for Barrio, life is certainly exceedingly more unfair for Lorenzo and a thousand other bulls that will die this summer to satisfy the blood lust of the sadistic crowds that support this horrendous festival of blood, gore and pain.
Lorenzo’s victory over Barrio did not save his life and the Spanish bull-fighting syndicate exacted further revenge by immediately sending Santa Coloma, the mother of Lorenzo to slaughter, thus ending his bloodline. The newspaper El País reported, “as tradition dictates, the “murderer’s” lineage ends with him.”
Matador Francisco Marco was also gored in Pamplona on Saturday.
On Friday 16 idiots were injured in Pamplona with the running of the bulls. Two more were gored on Saturday in Pamplona and also on Saturday a 28-year old man died in the bull-run in the Spanish town of Alicante.
Last year 10 men were fatally gored in bull runs in Spain.
Yes it is sad that Barrio died and yes it is sad that 18 people were injured (2 critically, one mortally) in Pamplona and Alicante. I am not glad that the matador and an idiot died died nor the 17 other macho fools were injured, but I can’t say that I’m sad or sorry.
What bothers me is the injustice for Lorenzo. Slain if he loses, slain if he wins, plus the slaughter of his mother. The Spanish media actually brands a bull a murderer if he wins and glorifies the serial killing sadistic narcissists called matadors if they win or lose, and for every matador that dies on the horns of a bull, thousands of bulls die from the sword of the matador.
This not a sport, it is a bloody archaic slaughter for thrills stemming from the ancient Roman circus days of the bestiarii gladiators. It is not a sport if one side, the bull, is tortured before being killed and has no chance of living, win or lose.
It is brutal, vindictive, vengeful and sadistic and to label a sentient being defending himself as a murderer is a repulsive anthropocentric conceit.
Barrio died because he made the decision to pit himself against a bull whose testicles were being crushed by elastic bands and whose blood was oozing from multiple wounds inflicted by the cowardly picadors. Maddened with pain and fearful of the roaring crowd, Lorenzo managed nonetheless to strike a blow for his species. He killed one of the heartless monsters tormenting him, and I for one celebrate his achievement.
Lorenzo is dead but we need more victories by the bulls until this madness is ended and the torture is no more.
The news media in Spain is attacking the “heartless” critics of bull-fighting for declaring that Barrio and the 17 idiots in Pamplona and the one dead dumbass in Alicante deserved what they got. However the reality is that Barrio and the 18 knuckle-draggers got exactly what they deserved.
A hundred years ago no one would have cheered the death of a matador. But this is not 1916, it is 2016, and this despicable murderous macho charade of courage has no place in the world anymore. Today the Bulls have their supporters and more humans are jeering matadors than cheering them. Matadors need to be tossed into the dustbin of history along with gladiators, bestiarii, bear baiters, dog fighters, grind masters and cock-fighters.
So the fans of bull-fighting should stop whining about more compassionate people cheering for the bull and jeering the matadors. When they stop their insane orgies of killing, when they stop cheering for blood and death, we will stop celebrating the victories of the bulls.
El Toro Lorenzo, I salute you. Well done, you died avenged.

The Ecological Insanity of a Plastic World
I took this picture yesterday at the super market. Lemons and Orange are already naturally wrapped. Why does anyone need to wrap each fruit in plastic? There is an estimated 700 million tons of plastic in the Ocean now and more is added everyday. Plastic is killing life in the sea.
I took some vegetables to be weighed and priced but they refused to weight the vegetables unless I put them in a plastic bag. It is so difficult to not buy plastic. I went to the water section and there was not one bottle of water available in glass. Six packs of Perrier in cans was all that was available and each can was connected by plastic.
Plastic is a greater threat to sea-life than oil spills. Oil degrades in sunlight and with bacteria. Plastic does not. In the 1980's when I wrote about plastic pollution people thought I was being ridiculous. Now at last these concerns are being taken seriously.
Plastic needs to be eliminated from our lives. The world got along without plastic before the Fifties. Food should be sold in glass containers and with recycled paper. I have three cloth shopping bags that I take to the store but it is always a dilemma.
The Uproar Continues.
Commentary by Captain Paul Watson
The uproar continues over the death of Harambe and rightfully so.
Some of the comments that I have received are extremely ignorant like the ones saying that the gorilla would have eaten the child.
Gorillas do not eat meat.
Back in 1986 a young boy fell into the gorilla enclosure in Jersey, (U.K.) The silverback there was named Jambo. He came to the boy and gently touched him and then stood back and guarded the boy while two zookeepers and a medic jumped in to retrieve the child. None of them men were attacked and the boy's injuries were from the fall, not from the gorilla.
For those who have expressed outrage at me by saying that the life of an endangered lowland gorilla is more important than a human child I can only say that it is this type of anthropocentric outlook that is the cause of so much animal suffering in this world.
All species are interdependent. From a purely ecological point of view the life of an endangered species is indeed more important that the life of a species that numbers in excess of 7.5 billion.
But that is not even an issue because the child in this case was not in danger.
The zoo said they could not use tranquilizer darts for fear the gorilla would fall upon the child. This is not logical because the same consequence could have happened with bullets. Firemen were there and they could have used a fire hose to separate the gorilla from the child although there was no need because the gorilla did not intend to cause harm to the child.
If the zoo-keepers had the courage and the intelligence displayed by the three men in Jersey, the gorilla would have been saved along with the boy.
That boy was with the gorilla for 10 minutes while humans screamed irrationally, contributing nothing to the situation but chaos. Harambe did not cause any harm to the boy because he was not dangerous. The only dangerously violent animals were the humans with their guns.
I was touched by what Jerry Stones had to say about the gorilla that he knew from the time he was born.
Jerry Stones raised Harambe since birth and said he's spent the past day in tears after finding the endangered Silverback had been killed by zoo officials a day after the gorilla's 17th birthday.
“An old man can cry, too,” Stones, 74, told the Daily News. “He was a special guy in my life. Harambe was my heart. It's like losing a member of the family.”
Stones looked after the beloved primate for a majority of Harambe's life, before he got transferred to the Cincinnati Zoo last year.
“I raised him from a baby, he was a sweet cute little guy,” Stones recalled. “He grew up to be a pretty, beautiful male. He was very intelligent. Very, very intelligent,” Stones reiterated. "His mind was going constantly. He was just such a sharp character." “It tore me a new one,” Stones said, after receiving news of the slaying.
Silverback gorillas, who can live up to 60 years in captivity, tend to be "gentle giants," Stones said. “It’s a tragic set of circumstances that left a beautiful young gorilla in a situation that was foreign and ultimately ended up being dangerous for him,” Stones said.
Gorillas should not be traded around like football players. Harambe lived peacefully in Texas for 16 years. He died in Ohio within a year because of negligence, ignorance and incompetence.
